Rhetoric In Earth Tones by DD Wright

Counting years of history,
emasculating men &
raping the Queens,
has lead down a
slippery slope saturated
with sadomasochistic
songs,

image

they blast all day long
even if we no longer hear them.
Slavery instituted for the sake
of currency,
taking children away
from their families &
still, most of believe we are free
yet the documents created to
oppress ancestry,
speak truth about the legacy
& we say, it is fictional & fallacies.
Lynching was not a term
created for no reason
despite the fact that we
have survived seasons.
Take a good look around.
Not knocking weaves but
why is our natural hair not
associated with beauty?
Or at least, not defined the same?
Why are so many coco brown
women single mothers or
we have to endure broke, broken
or defeated brothers
to reflect
what was broken out of neglect
before we arrived?
Ever stare at President Obama &
the First Lady &
think of how beautiful that is?
Ever look at a couple in black art
until your soul falls apart &
realize, how impossible that may
be for you to have in reality?
Ever wonder for one moment,
what it would be like to
live with a history of
freedom, equality &
an entire family?
The Huxtables made people
believe,
The Obamas, a cultural victory.
However, statistically,
is that the norm for our eyes
to see?
Where are our Baracks & Theodores?
When we will we learn to not only adore
ourselves but each other?
Unlearn all of those signals
that make us hate each other
& ourselves?
Or did the document end correctly?
Do we have 2 more centuries
before we can breathe? – DD Wright. (ART WORK NOT MINE)
