Social Networks for Healing and Happiness

There are countless social networking websites available. The fact that social networks are accessible on cell phones means that within seconds, you can tweet, update a status, upload a picture and/or type a quick blog on WordPress. If you want to be found (or followed), you can use Google Maps to “check in” to wherever you may be and your vfollowers or friends can simply show up. No matter how exciting or scary that may be, we have to face it (no pun intended), social networks have made our world and privacy a lot smaller.
There are still some people who fly under the radar and refuse to join any of them. I would imagine that is difficult considering the many benefits that come with being a member. For the sake of a debate, this blog is going to focus on the positive aspects. The social networks mentioned in this blog are those that I am a member of. If you are sad, lonely, ill, looking for a job, want to “jump start” a dream or just want a little entertainment, social networking may be able to provide you with the happiness and/or heealing you need. In no way am I stating that a phone app or 2 or 3 will replace the human touch. Simply stated, social networks can provide a moment of clarity, a lesson learned or a reinforcement of hope.
1) Facebook: Perhaps the best and most touching feature of Facebook is an opportunity to reunite with people that may otherwise be a memory from many years ago. Searching for names of former teachers, classmates, long lost relatives or whomever you may want to reconnect with is just as easy as sending them a friend request. Viewing pictures, posting pictures and reading/posting status updates allows for dialog as well as insight.

2) Twitter: The word “Tweet” exists because of Twitter. Twitter allows you to post quick updates about pretty much whatever you want. If you hashtag it (putting the # sign right before a catchy word), then strangers can read what you wrote and comment or repost to their page (assuming your page is public). Twitter makes it easy to follow celebrities, characters, organizations (such as the New York Public Library). Searching for their names and clicking “Follow” is too easy to do. When you are following someone, you can read their tweets when you log on to your Twitter account. With Twitter, users can repost Tweets of those that you follow. YOu can repost them with a comment if you like which can lead to a dialog but at the very least, an opportunity to be noticed.

3) LinkedIn: LinkedIn is more of a professional network. Those who are in or would like to be in certain professions can share articles with those within their LinkedIn “network”. Users are able to post information about professions, professional interests as well as “link” people to others that may share similar goals and/or accomplishments. This is a great social network for those who like to keep up with the activities of former/present colleagues, employers or businesses that are dear to them.

4) Instagram: Instagram is an amazing visual social network. Similar to Twitter, hashtags can be used and searched, in order to find pictures of interest. For example if posting or looking for pictures of the sky #sky will take you to pictures of the sky. Using that hashtag will take IG (instagram) users directly to your picture. Users follow each other and are able to shae/view pictures from all over the world. Commenting below pictures is an innonvative way to communicate with people that share common interests. This network is ideal for anyone who enjoys taking, sharing and/or viewing pictures.

5) Pinterest: Pininterest is very unique. This is yet another social network surrounding the idea of sharing images. Pinterest allows users to “pin” pictures onto a “board” that can be viewed by users and non-users. To pin a picture is Pinterest’s way of saying post. Pictures can be pinned from the internet (such as fashion items, ads, etc) or personal photos. The boards are named by the users. Common boards are “Quotes”, “Fashion” or “Tattoos”. Personalized board names are determined by the users. An author can use their book title as a board name. a female with a shoe fetish can post several boards with names such as “Stilettos”, “Moccasins” or “Sneakers”.

6) SoundCloud: SoundCloud is self-explanatory. It is based on “sounds”. This social network allows artists, poets and bands to post their craft to a website. It is simple. Soundcloud allows users to record. The recoding is saved within the site and a link is created. This link can be “liked” or commented on by those who hear the sound. This link can be emailed to any and everyone. It is also a great social network for those who like to listen to underground music or looking to discover talent!

7) WordPress: The best was saved for last. WordPress is a blogging site that allows writers or those who simply love sharing information can psot as often as they choose. Members of WordPress can read blogs written by other users. Similar to Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, WordPress users can “like” a blog that they read. Users are also able to “follow” blogs so that whenver that particular blog is updated, those who follow it will receive it immediately. WordPress offers email enabling which allows both users and non users to receive updated blogs via email. Media can be added to blogs such as music, pictures and video. WordPress encompasses many features of other social networks all in one.
