The Girl In The Box by DD Wright

image

(Photo not mine.)
She was uncertain of her sanity.
Too many had served her chocolate cake &
smiled with her
before turning around
using it to make make up
for her face.
It was not just one
who blamed her whenever
she made a request or
wanted love,
that love that makes everything
alright,
she became addicted to the idea &
hearing
NO.
She fought hard to survive anguish &
on many occasions,
saved face by giving to others
what she so desperately needed.
The pit grew deeper.
The box grew steeper &
those who took,
became shadows at night.

She was uncertain of her worth.
Never believing she deserved
what she wanted to receive.
Never wanting to believe
what the others believed
about her
but the voice, confirmed by
those who claimed to love her,
never faltered,
yet became increasingly
more audible.
The echoes from within
became monsters &
she was determined to defeat them,
if only with her pen.
She had to win,
for the rest of them,
afflicted with this condition,
which remains without cure.

She was uncertain that anyone
would add to her ability to multiply,
only concerned with division
of her from her provisions,
subtracting in her dreams,
she wanted to scream,
“What is wrong with me?”
yet to afraid to even whisper.
Her mouth and mind has been
popped like Pavlov’s dogs,
far too many times to add to an equation.
She remained silent
without a soul to welcome her poetry.  Her below zero integers
infinitely growing
in the box.

She was not depressed
but oppressed,
died before she could repress
all that she was uncertain of.
Her beauty, only witnessed in
hindsight.
Now she is embraced by the light
of eternity.
May the girl in the box
finally rest in peace.  – DD Wright
